Based on ThursdaysChild's suggestion, here's a thread for discussing the upcoming categorization of Free Stuff. Basically, what is the best way to define a deal in Free Stuff? Also, what's a deal breaker and what's a deal maker? The terms will be used to create categories for Free Stuff, which in turn will help Free Stuff users filter out the deals they don't want and hone in on the deals they are interested in.

Here are some examples already mentioned in Free Stuff FAQ discussion:

Absolutely Free Stuff
Free w/ Postage
SASE mail in offer
Printable free coupon (may become moot for some items with new grocery forum)
Free coupon by mail (again, may be moot for some items with new grocery forum)
Call in- live operator
Call in- automated call

And that's just to get us started!

Surveys is certainly do-able.

What do you think of FrugalFreak's suggestions? I think UPC point freebies is good. By business required freebies, do you mean freebies aimed at businesses? If so, it's definitely a must, although a better name might be "business only freebies"?

Lastly, do you guys want to see religious freebies have their own category? They don't particularly bother me, but this is what you guys want.

free with purchase, which really isn't free, and maybe try to integrate a gauge or something into the free forums so when we actually get our stuff, we can just click a button saying received, instead of posting a reply...?

I may be totally wrong, but I really dont see too many religious freebies that would warrant a separate category for it.

For me, FREE means no money changes hands.
You could also do
FREE with shipping chgs
FREE with signup-survey-newsletter (etc)
FREE with rebate
FREE with coupon-promo codes

Although when I'm looking for something I'm more like going to search by topic. Meaning tech, home, travel, entertainment and I usually don't care whether it's a rebate or promo-code.

The only addition I'd make would be regional deals (including freebies). Group about 10 states together. It's discouraging to see a FREE PIZZA topic and discover it's in the N.E. only and I'm in the S.W. But it would be handy for when I travel to look up local deals.
The other bonus about having regional forums is it'd be a good place to open up to more local deals. Ask for a coupon in the local paper, figure out which stores do what, get referrals, the name of a store manager ...

very few religious freebies, dont think they need a sep. catagory as long as religious is in the title

Sometimes you get free stuff along with a contest entry.

I'd rather leave it alone. I like to scan through everything. Maybe I don't like email but if it's a product I like then I'll do it. I don't want to check every sub category every time. The only division I would make is "business only"

It would be nice to view one catagory, a few select catagories, or all free items. Then you could customize what you see to your preference and everyone (well, almost) would be happy

Meaning a stamp, right? I assume a $4.99 shipping charge for a free T-shirt won't be put here.

So here's what I'm hearing so far:

Absolutely Free Stuff
Free w/ Postage
SASE mail in offer
Call in-live operator
Call in-automated call
Cap/Card/UPC point freebies
Business only freebies
Free with shipping charges
Free with sign-up-survey-newsletter
Free with rebate
Free with promo codes
Free coupon by mails

FAR hasn't been allowed in FS before, and IMO it doesn't belong. It requires purchase and you have to wait to get your money back. I know in the end it ends up free but it still doesn't seem like it belongs. When I look in Free Stuff I expect to see things that require no cost whatsoever, even if it's just initially.

How about "In-Store (B&M)" or "Brick & Mortar (In-Store)"

There are a number of freebies that require travel to a particular store - usually food/drink but also cosmetics and the recent free bouquet offer.

... and wouldn't it be "free after rebate"?
