Panasonic DMC-LZ10K Lumix 10.1 Megapixel Compact Digital Camera - Black
Price Reflects $50 Instant Rebate thru 08/30/08
5x Optical, 4x Digital zoom / 2.5" Polycrystalline LCD / Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens / Built-in Flash / SD/SDHC, MultiMedia Card / PictBridge
J&R Item # PAN DMCLZ10K
Mfr. Part # DMC-LZ10K

5x Optical, 4x Digital zoom / 2.5" Polycrystalline LCD / Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens / Built-in Flash / SD/SDHC, MultiMedia Card / PictBridge

# With both a 30mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens and a 5x zoom, this is one camera that does it all. You can fit more in the photo than you can with a 35mm lens, so you can get more of a sweeping landscape in a single shot. The 5x zoom is great for capturing dramatic shots of small or distant subjects. There's also an Extra Optical Zoom function that boosts zoom power to 8.9x in 3-megapixel Resolution mode. Simply set the LZ10 to iA mode and let the camera do the rest. Intelligent Scene Selector chooses the mode that best fits the situation; MEGA Optical Image stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control helps prevent motion blur; and Face Detection helps produce clear portraits by optimizing the Focus and Exposure settings. The brightness and contrast of the large 2.5" diagonal LCD adjust automatically in 10 steps as ambient light conditions change, so images are clear, bright and easy to see day or night, indoors or outdoors. I'll add the PG review bonus to the OP, though we now know that the most $5 bonuses that can be left is probably 22 more ... minus yours and mine already downloaded!!!

Thanks PirateSteve, I was in the process of putting together the same scenario after reading your initial post about a possible printer deal. With PA shipping I would have paid a little more, but not bad if you need a printer. I'll add the possible printer deal to the OP, thanks again!!!

Arg I was all set to buy and then noticed there's no optical viewfinder. An excellent deal for those who don't care/don't want that feature.

An excellent deal for those who don't care/don't want that feature.Yes, and it seems many of the point and shoot digital cameras seem to discard optical viewfinders these days because I guess the manufacturers believe most people using them will just prefer using the LCD screen to view the shot being taken anyway.

I'll add that mention to the OP description.

But what I do really like is that this camera has 5x optical zoom and a manual focus mode, which many cameras in this class/price range don't.

Just received my Lumix DMC-LZ10 today from J&R.com in perfect condition.

I'm waiting for my 4GB SDHC card to arrive but couldn't wait to open this up and give it a quick tryout. It is so far above and beyond an improvement over my last PAS camera that it's hard to not like it compared to the old Olympus D-580 it replaced!

I really like the interface and the bigger LCD screen, just wish it was a 3" instead of 2.5" size. It was very easy to use right out of the box without even going over the instructions. After I get to use it more I'll try to remember to come back and hopefully give a better picture of my overall experience using it!

So far I really like the looks, user controls, and compact size; even as small as it is compared to my old Olympus, it feels very good in my hand(s) while taking pictures.

Here are some informative links for those interested.

I do have at least one important comment about the first review below, at dcresource.com, where it states that the camera has no red-eye reduction settings and it must be done through software. This camera certainly has a red-eye reduction setting right in the menu for the flash settings. The first setting under flash is Auto while the very next setting is Auto/Red-eye!
Maybe the original firmware didn't have the red-eye setting under the flash menu back when the camera was first introduced and reviewed, but these certainly do have one now! Though I have not yet had the chance to test this setting in real life scenarios yet , I know I eventually will have the opportunity to try it!

DCRP Review
The final recommendation in the review (and at a MUCH higher cost! ) :
"Overall, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ10 is a pretty nice camera. You get a wide-angle lens, more zoom than a typical compact camera, image stabilization, manual controls, and more, all for about $230. It does have some flaws, but they're really no worse than the other cameras in this class. The DMC-LZ10 easily earns my recommendation -- it's well worth a look."

DigitalCameraReview
The final recommendation in the review (and at a MUCH higher cost! ) :
"The final word in my mind is that while the LZ10 outperforms many other cameras in the same price range, it isn't perfect. Most consumers are likely to find the cheaper Canon PowerShot A590 IS or the slightly more expensive Nikon Coolpix P5100 to be more appealing choices. Still, the LZ10 is a solid little camera with a great deal of photographic potential."
